Deny — 3 years old, abused, and the first hands that touched him weren’t there to hurt him

There are photos we have to sit with for a long time before we post them.

Not because we hesitate. But because we need a moment to breathe.

This is Deny. 3 years old. A dog living in California — in a home that should have been the safest place in the world for him. It wasn’t.

When Deny came to us, the skin across his head and neck had been severely damaged from abuse. Not an accident. Not a disease. Someone deliberately did this to a 3-year-old living being who had no way to defend himself, no voice, and no understanding of why he had to endure it.

This photo was taken during his first wound cleaning.

The hands in this photo are wearing medical gloves — not because we were afraid of Deny, but because we wanted to protect his open wounds from infection. This was the first time in a long time that someone touched Deny not to hurt him.

He trembled.

Then he went still.

We don’t know if Deny will remember. But we believe his body will — the feeling of a gentle hand, of warm water, of someone whispering “you’re okay now.”

Deny is currently receiving treatment and monitoring in California. He needs weeks of continuous wound care, behavioral assessment, and after that — a real family.
